Although it may feel like summer has just started, it’s already time for back-to-school shopping!
Back-to-school shopping in the US is predicted to reach $82.8 billion in 2018, according to the NRF. The shopping season begins in early July and continues into September, accounting for 20% of all US retail spend outside of the winter holidays.
In past years, the bulk of back-to-school purchases weren’t made until the end of the summer in August and over Labor Day weekend. However, Amazon Prime Day (which takes place annually in mid-July) has sparked a major shift in when the back-to-school shopping season begins. Since Prime Day’s launch in 2015, other retailers have quickly followed suit by offering their own promotions both online and in-store during the same timeframe. This has effectively changed the timeline of the back-to-school shopping season, beginning about a month earlier than usual.
This year, shoppers plan to spend the most on apparel and electronics. Other popular items include cosmetics and school-related accessories, such as backpacks and shoes. Families with children in elementary through high school plan to spend an average $684.79, while college and graduate students plan to spend an all-time high of roughly $942.17.
